2009 Incident #39 17.08.09 1447BST #3926

The Initial Response Team ‘IRT’ was tasked to investigate the sighting of two adults and two adolescents climbing the sea defence wall to the east of Lyme Regis.  The targets were seen climbing the protection wall having become cut off by the incoming tide.  After an initial search along the whole length of the sea wall, rescue helicopter 106 carried out a further search in the undergrowth of the cliffs.  A subsequent 999 call advised that a German couple had climbed into a nearby garden covered in mud and badly scratched but had then quickly disappeared.  Despite extensive searches of car parks and public amenities, the tourists were not found.  Following a detailed review, it was decided that the two adolescents would have climbed to safety through the undergrowth.
