The IRT was tasked to investigate reports that children were walking on the ice that now covers the River Char. 8 children were found in the vicinity and were warned of the very real dangers that they were putting themselves in. The recent cold snap has seen a number of tragic accidents where people have ventured on to untested ice.
The coastguard would urge members of the never to walk on frozen ponds and rivers and also to prevent their dogs from walking on it; this minimises the chances of an accident. The ice can become thin very quickly and it is difficult to judge the thickness of ice.
