The full coastguard rescue team was called to assist a ten-year old boy and his 71 year old grandfather who had become trapped in the quicksand up to their waists. The grandfather became stuck after trying to assist his grandson who had climbed the landslip to the east of Charmouth. The boy had initially gone to help his dog. Both casualties were recovered using the specialist mud rescue equipment which is designed to break the ‘vacuum’ that is created around the trapped limbs. South West Ambulance checked both casualties to ensure they were not suffering any ill effects from either the cold or the rescue.
The Coastguard team from West Bay also attended to help carry out the rescue.
Whilst on on still scene and putting up additional warning signs, the coastguards were asked to rescue another ten-year old girl who had also become stuck. She did not require medical attention.
