The IRT was tasked to rescue two people lost and stuck on the cliffs five hundred metres west of St Gabriel’s. The casualties had mobile phone contact with the Coastguard Operations Room at Portland. At first the causalities reported that they were stuck on a ledge at Cains Folly, near Charmouth. After reviewing the casualties’ original tracks, the IRT determined that their likely location was some 2.5km further east. The couple and their two dogs had left the beach and walked up the cliffs deep into Broom Cliff. Using local knowledge and the help of a local fishing boat offshore, the coastguards climbed the cliffs and located the casualties some 15 minutes and 100 metres from the shore. The casualties were escorted back down onto the beach avoiding the quicksand and mud floes. The couple were safe and well and continued their journey on foot back to Charmouth.
