2010 Incident #45 04.08.10 1617UTC #3672

The Initial Response Team, the IRT, was tasked to Charmouth to investigate reports of an inflatable ‘toy’ dinghy drifting 1.5 nautical miles to the south-east.  Initially it was thought that children might be on board but it was soon established that the inflatable was empty.  Two boys had let go of the inflatable as they were getting it ready on the beach.  A passing kayaker had picked up the inflatable but had cut it free due to the increasingly squally weather conditions.  The local Coastguard was able to provide the Coastguard control room information including a description of the inflatable, bearings, weather conditions and tide.  This information enables the operations room to predict the likely future location of the inflatable and respond accordingly if any more 999 call are received.
