2010 Incident #53 27.08.10 1409UTC #4168

The Initial Response Team, the IRT, was tasked to rescue a 76 year old with a suspected heart attack.  The incident occurred at Canary Ledges, on the beach below Black Ven between Charmouth & Lyme Regis.  The casualty was taking part in a fossil walk along the beach.  The casualty had a history of atrial fibrillation (abnormal heart rhythm) which significantly increases the risk of a stroke.  Due to the seriousness of incident and the difficulty of access, it was decided  to use the Coastguard helicopter, Rescue 106, to quickly airlift the casualty to Dorchester Hospital A & E.
