The Initial Response Team was tasked to rescue two elderly females believed to be swept into the sea at Church Cliffs, 200m east of Lyme Regis. The previous day the ladies had been warned of the high spring tides and the possibility of becoming cut off from the tide. On the day of the incident, the pair was seen returning to Lyme during the rising tide. However they failed to appear around the groynes below East Cliff, near Lyme Regis. The coastguard helicopter carried out a detailed search using heat seeking technology. The inshore lifeboat also carried out a shoreline search. The dense undergrowth and gardens between East Cliff and the Spittles were also searched. The ladies were never located and in the absence of any further information, it was assumed they made a safe return.
