The whole coastguard team was mobilised to search for two lost people on the cliffs in the Spittles / Black Ven area between Charmouth and Lyme Regis. The couple, from Surrey, had climbed up into the cliffs to avoid becoming caught by the incoming tide. As they clambered the cliffs, the couple had sunk into the mud and became trapped up to their knees. A team of five coastguards walked into the precarious cliff area to begin the search whilst other members of the team tried to locate the couple from a high vantage point. There are no footpaths and the area is constantly subjected to new landslides and erosion. After 50 minutes the couple were located by the search party and then walked out to safety, two hours after their 999 call. Fortunately the couple had the appropriate outdoor clothing, a fully charged mobile phone and a torch. They did not require any medical attention and were returned to their holiday accommodation in Lyme Regis.
