The Initial Response Team, the IRT, was tasked to assist the RNLI with the recovery of three divers whose dive boat had broken down. The 5m RIB had drifted from the dive location due to engine failure. The RNLI inshore lifeboat initially recovered the divers and then returned to collect the vessel. The divers were diving the wreck of the 3073-ton steamship Baygitano which was torpedoed in 1918, 1.5 miles south of Lyme Regis Harbour. The Baygitano was on voyage from Le Havre to Cardiff.
