The IRT was tasked to investigate a strobe light seen about 10 nautical miles off shore south south west of Lyme Regis. The sighting was reported to the Coastguard by a concerned off duty member of the lifeboat crew. He was concerned the light may be a strobe sometimes activated on life jackets and immersion suits. The Coastguard issued a VHF radio message and also scanned all the usable ‘ship to ship’ radio channels. They managed to locate a Cornish fisherman ‘ring netting’ for mackerel in the bay. He had marked the position of his net with this high intensity strobe. The clear night had meant that the light was easily visible from the shore.
