The IRT was tasked to investigate the circumstances surrounding the breakdown of a 21′ Four Winns speedboat. The boat’s engine had failed near Ladram Bay and had initially been taken under tow by the independent Sidmouth Lifeboat. The RNLI Lyme Regis lifeboat later brought the vessel into Lyme Regis harbour due to the state of the tide. It appeared that the vessel had suffered an electrical fault which meant that the boat could not be restarted. The four persons on board were all wearing life jackets; the vessel was equipped with a VHF radio and carried the appropriate flares.
