2012 Incident #39 31.07.12 1406UTC #3100

The Initial Response Team, the IRT,was tasked to assist the RNLI with the rescue of a father and son who had capsized their inflatable kayak, 300 metres offshore at Charmouth.  The vessel had been capsized by the surf as the pair turned to come ashore after they realised the environmental conditions were too hazardous.  They were unable to right the kayak but had managed to scramble onto the upturned hull.  They called the coastguard realising their predicament could easily deteriorate further. Both father and 12 year old son were well equipped with buoyancy aids, a VHF radio & a charged mobile phone.  The ‘casualties’ were returned to Lyme Regis harbour suffering from mild hypothermia and shock.  They were gradually ‘warmed up’ and checked over by paramedics.  After two hours, they were able to return to their holiday accommodation to continue their holiday on dry land!
